The Beach will be sending athletes to compete in the West Coast Relays in Fresno, California as well as the Hayward Premiere in Eugene, Oregon.
LONG BEACH, Calif. – The Long Beach State track and field team will have competitors up in Fresno on Thursday and Friday, and in Oregon on Friday and Saturday.
At the West Coast Relays, the women and men's hammer throw will start at 3:00 p.m. on Thursday, March 31st. On Friday, women and men's javelin will start at 10:00 a.m. on the field while the running events will start with the women's 4x100m relay at 1:00 p.m.
At the Hayward Premiere, the field events will begin at 3:00 p.m. on Friday with the men's hammer throw, and the track events will begin at 5:30 p.m. with an exhibition event. On Saturday they will continue the action at 11:00 a.m. with women's discus on the field and the men's 4x100m relay on the track at 1:00 p.m.
Last weekend saw a stellar performance when the Beach competed at UCLA and UCR, as the athletes continued to get personal bests, and rack up wins. The Beach sent Spencer Eley, Hailey Fune, and Kayla Reynante to UCR where Fune and Reynante finished second and third respectively in the women's Heptathlon and Eley finished third in the men's Decathlon. Eley showcased his talent by winning first in the Pole Vault, clearing the bar at 4.65m, over a foot above his other competitors. Fune totaled 4,674 points in the meet, with her best event being the Long Jump, where she jumped 5.56m to land herself in third place. Reynante had a successful first Heptathlon with a victory in the 800m that helped her finish third overall with 4,068 points.
Long Beach was also able to claim three out of the Big West weekly honors after their efforts this past weekend. Imani Carmouche claimed the Women's Field Athlete of the Week, Ryley Fick claimed the Women's Track Athlete of the Week, and Charlie Vernoy claimed the Men's Field Athlete of the Week title. Fick had a great race where she finished second in the 3000m Steeplechase with a time of 10:26.28 putting her at second on Long Beach State's all-time list.
Carmouche posted a new lifetime best of 5.65m in the Long Jump, and earned first place in the High Jump, clearing 1.75m, in which she is ranked ninth in the nation. Vernoy has had quite the season, as he currently ranks second place in Discus, and third place in Shot Put and Hammer Throw in the conference; this is also his second time in his career that he has been given the Men's Field Athlete honor.
UCLA also saw Jason Smith return to competition in style, winning the men's Long Jump with a jump of 7.49m; his mark ranks number one in the Big West. Crystal Washington also continued to show her undeniable power as she jumped 12.56m on Saturday to win the women's Triple Jump, in which she is also leading in the Big West.
